The American Geriatric Society (AGS) recently
reported that statistics show one in three people over
the age of sixty-five will experience a fall in the coming
year. Those who survive falls can become dependent on
assistive devices (such as walkers) or skilled care as
a result of fear from a reoccurrence of a second fall.
The AGS
points out that two-thirds of falls are preventable, and exercise
can play a major role in decreasing fall risk. In fact, a recent
AGS analysis of 16 falls found that lower extremity leg weakness
was a significant factor in 10 falls, balance deficit a factor
in eight, and visual impairment a factor in six falls.
California Rehabilitation has a Fall Risk Reduction program
that focuses on strengthening specific trunk and lower extremity
muscles, as well as balance activities to promote increase reflex
reactions to decrease the risk of a fall. We also provide patient
education on how to make home modifications for a safer living
environment.
If you have any questions concerning our
Fall Risk Reduction program, please call California Rehabilitation
